I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! Such a nice story, nice game mechanics, just lovely all around.

This looks like such a cool game, but I can’t play it on my mac! It crashes with constant Read-only file system: errors. I downloaded the game into a folder with read/write permissions, but the errors are coming from somewhere deep in my filesystem. I think this is due to app translocation, unfortunately. I’m on macOS 10.14.6.

I was able to download and play on an older mac! OSX 10.9.5 worked. I do think the issue might be app translocation on newer OSX versions, but I’m not sure how to get around that.

Thank you for the game, that was lovely! The meta aspect especially, not to mention the bonus game I got where I learned about app translocation :)

I liked the sound- it was simple and atmospheric without feeling repetitive. You brought a lot of interaction to a game without having to actually build in all that interaction, which was clever. Very nice.

i'm glad you got it working. re: app translocation you can try steps like these: https://wiki.keyboardmaestro.com/assistance/Translocation_Problem

(+1)

Thanks! That did fix the problem. I had to download the zip file, open it, and then move the lightsoffgame.app file itself (NOT the folder it was in) to another location. Once I did that the errors stopped. You might want to specify that mac users need to move that file specifically to another location, not just download it to somewhere outside the Downloads folder.

I wanted to try this on my windows pc, however my malware detection caught this file while unzipping it. I even tried to exclude the file from the malware detection but it would still not allow it. It looks cool from the pictures, so good job with that!

I really liked playing this game. I will say that the concept of the game is really cool.

ah this game is so good! not being able to figure out to do with (CARD) is gunna bother me though!!

(+1)

I gave this game a play-through, and I must say, it's a VERY well done game with a really cool concept at it's core.

I'm stuck at

*spoiler*

The phone room

Think outside the game.

pleasee add this to the playstore i really want to play it thank u

absolutely 10/10.

Just finished playing this and I love love love love love it!! The gameplay was quite unique, and I loved solving the puzzles!! The storyline was amazing, and the artwork was simply spectacular!! I would totally recommend anybody that likes playing puzzle games to play this!!

(+1)(-1)

So good. Better than Doki Doki.

(+1)(-1)

Pros and cond are down below) Check out my vid here:

Advantages:

1. This is so damn cool! I loved the concept, it was such a cool puzzle game! The 4th wall breaking was definitely creepy, I had goozebumps all over!

2. The art style is cool) I love how simplistic it is but at the same time it feels like the characters are looking right into your soul!

3. That's very cool that there are multiple versions of comments for the same stuff, so cool to return to the game to see what has changed.

Disadvantages:

1. I think the game would benefit a lot if you'd script the situations when the player puts stuff in the wrong places (like comments which signifies that it actually happened in the world but it was not the right solution). Though, that's hard to script everything, so you can do only the most common mistakes. It'd still be so much cooler!

2. It would be awesome is there'd be different solutions whith different consequences for the same task. For example, the player could feed the goldfish or could place it in the tank in the other room and it would get eaten and dissapear so the player would have to restart. Or it would be even cooler if the player would have to fail in order to progress (for example: make the goldfish eaten, then it'd drop something which the player would have to save in the other folder and use upon restrrting).

3. Maybe the game would benefit a lot if you add more sound cues to it. There is no nee to voice act everything, but if the last Dark's lined would be suddenly voice acted, that'd blow the player's mind!

Overall:

I guess, there is so much more which can be done with the game in order to improve it. Normally, if I see lots of room for improvement, I rate 4 stars. But this experience got me so involved and fascinated that I can not rate it less than 5. 5/5 it is!

Hope my feedback was useful!

After the second night I was sure this was just going to be a blatant Doki Doki rip-off, but it really surprised me in terms of quality storyline, artwork, and gameplay. The puzzles were just the right amount of challenging and hard and I'm having an uncommon and uncharacteristic lack of remorse for time spent playing video games. Thanks, npckc!

So cute! So Goth! So Fun! So Cutegothfun!! Fetch my eyeliner, we're getting gloomy!

This game was super interesting and really, really fun! Thank you for putting it out!

SPOILER

I don't know if someone already found it, but if you open the (CARD) with adobe reader you get a close-up view of her two eyes, with one of them open, like when she says :"Just let me know".

I think that's the only thing and the game ends there

(+1)

I opened it in Google drive. Same image appeared of her winking, but opening the file resulted in it saying DARK as the header and 3141 in bold. It is a PDF.

Loved the game! It was unsettling but awesome! I needed to fix some technical difficulties, but I finished the game and I walked my friend through! Thank you for one of the best games I've ever played! <3

"KEY" file did not show up in my playthrough, had to look up a walkthrough to see what was going on.

(+1)

OMG, I'm so proud to have figured it out! Loved it!!

How to Reset!

Just writing this so everyone knows how to reset! There are two files called "persistent" that you have to delete. I searched up what to do and found this steam discussion: https://steamcommunity.com/app/429300/discussions/0/458605613403306861/
Basically just delete all your saves in the game itself (including persistent) and go to C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\RenPy\lightsoffgame-1597471368 and delete persistent there as well.

thanks!

(+1)

no problem!

I like npckc's other games and so I tried this game despite the fact that I can't handle horror well. Totally didn't regret for giving it a try! The puzzles are pretty challenging too. It's so good, really hope there'll be a continuation of this!!

edit: I agree with other comment, go play this game without reading anything about it first- trust me it'll be an enjoyable experience! :D

aaaah this was so cute!! the horror was really well done and the file elements were super cool :)

(2 edits) (+1)

I definitely recommend playing this game yourself before reading anything about it.

This is my favorite game you made so far npckc and one of my favorite games I played on itch.io. It’s hard to talk about without spoiling it but man oh man I loved it start to finish. The horror aspect of this game was pretty unnerving and utilized extremely well!

I made a video of my experiences with the game. Hopefully this can serve as a good walkthrough for those who might get stuck. Seriously, this was amazing! Looking forward to the next one!

omg this game is amazing

---EDIT: BY THE WAY, I KEEP GETTING ERROR MESSAGES, NOBODY'S TALKING ABOUT IT BUT I GET THEM EVERY TIME I DO SOMETHING, I'M JUST GUESSING THAT IT'S PART OF THE GAME, SO IT MAKES ME DO STUFF WITH THE FILES.

Hey random person! Um, I followed the games instructions, when the shopkeeper broke the fourth wall, I got chills, no doubt! Then it showed an error (did i just pee my pants? Nope.). I know this was on purpose, then it kept happening, I was confused (my mac usually hates running things), so then I completed the tasks the shopkeeper gave me over and over, multiple times, then I looked at the replies to this game! It had multiple spoilers that I didn't even understand, things about renaming and making files, pdfs, finding calling cards? Plus many other things... I knew it was this type of game after the 4th wall broke. Although, the only files I have are the game and the credits. Should I change something in the error text when I open it? I'm sorry, I just really want to keep playing this game! Thank you ;-;

(3 edits) (+1)

OK so, the errors are not part of the game, so you're going to want to fix those before you try to continue. After you fix that, you are going to want to find some way to turn off the lights. (The game gives you some hints when the black screen shows up).

After that, the game should be pretty simple so long as you have the game files open while you play. All of the editing stuff is just people experimenting post-game, you don't have to change the contents of any files while you play.

(1 edit)

Thank you! By the way, how do I restart the game?
Edit: I've tried deleting and redownloading the game

I'm not sure, but you can google how to reset a renpy game if you need to.

(1 edit)

Also, I honestly don't know how to fix the error thing D:

(+3)

a little note... for mac users...

if you are playing on a mac, please make sure you have the game folder in a writeable directory... (do not just play it in your downloads folder...)

as well...

if you find you are... stuck...

you may want to try... right-clicking the app...

to show package contents...

and then go to... contents/resources/autorun...

(1 edit)

then what?
Edit: also, is it normal for mac users to have an error code thing every single time they do something? If so how do i fix it?

it says its missing lightsoffgame.exe? why isnt it included in the windows download?

it's included in the windows download. make sure your antivirus software didn't isolate the .exe.

how do i do that

hey why was a post in this thread deleted

nice.

there isnt anything more after the calling card right?

(+2)

There's some cool things in the card you can discover, but as of now, no one has found a real use for it.

Hello! Are you interested in translating your game to spanish? I'm willing to do it for free, no prob!

I just noticed that Dark's card has her name spelled in all caps like the files between dimensions, like (KEY) or (LIGHT). I tried making a (DARK) file with 3141 in it, but it didn't seem to do anything. I think I might be on the right track though, can anyone else try it at different points in the game and see if it does anything? I'd rather not reset my game if I don't have to.

how do you reset your game? I reaaally wanna do it. Maybe try it on the phone, see if it does something.

(1 edit) (+1)

I'm not 100% sure myself, but I think it should just be deleting the save data in the game and then going into %appdata% to delete the renpy backup.

You can always google search how to reset a renpy game though

(+2)

I posted a comment on this page on how to do that :)

holy shit this was AMAZINGG it's so cute yet creepy and unsettleling. truly amazing

I’m always in awe at your renpy powers. This was so clever!!

I think that's just people experimenting still, trying to figure out where to put the number in Dark's card. I don't think anyone has actually solved it yet.

I've heard people say the number should be where her mouth is, if that helps.

If anyone has updates on what's going on with the calling card, let me know!

So far I have:

- Named myself "3141"

- Put "735" (the numbers in the script version of the pdf) into the phone

- Changed the (#) file to "3141"

- Turned on self voicing + text to speech and moused over/clicked on her mouth (someone told me that in the PDF the words/numbers are where her mouth is, cannot verify because I cannot turn the file into a PDF for some reason)

So far nothing has happened, but I'm convinced there must be some secret we've yet to find!

Omg, how did you do all of this? I feed the pets and plants and go to sleep, already have my fourth wall broken multiple times. Also, I see so many weird things on the replies here. I need help! (I'm on mac if it helps!!)

You'll have to fish around in the files a bit to get the ending. In the folder the game is located in there should be some files you can move around/delete. This aspect is crucial to the next few parts of the game.

Finished the game with my friend! AWESOME <3

super cute pets <3

What do I do with the calling car? It's cute but hm... how do I "cash it", get it? Hehe. edit: okey I KNEW something was written in that <3 what "t DARK 3141" means? how do I ... call that number? Do I have to reset the game and then enter the number on the telephone?

I don't know about the number, but I know from the art book that Dark is her name.

This is such a good game! I did something silly and forgot to move the game to the Applications folder; but once I did it was a very fun play! A very spooky but fun play.

(1 edit)

Yeah, it's not supposed to be intentional. It looks like the game might have read only access wherever you have it stored. Did you unzip it?

please move the game folder to a location which allows read/write

(+1)

Thank you, that fixed it.

(+3)

im not used to playing a lot of horror games but this was super fun to play!! the creepy atmosphere was super well done and i loved all the details that came up in the files as you progressed through the game. and the ending was super satisfying too, it took me a while to get it but at the same time it just made so much sense. (spoilers for the ending) also im so curious about what the card does, if it does anything at all :o if anyone finds out please do share!

(+3)

Change it to a PDF

This was a really great game! Normally I can't stand horror, but this was just enough for me to handle! (Had to turn off the music though)

Is there more than one ending though? There was one room I didn't have to do anything in.

Never mind, I know what it did now

This was so much fun!! I went through 5 days before being able to solve everything lolol. I don't know if the file persistent is anything, but it looks cool haha. This was a really enjoyable puzzle-solving, file-deleting game.

Can you help me with it? I'm stuck ;-;

(+1)

Yeah totally! Here's a full walkthrough. Also I'm pretty sure you need to do these steps twice as I believe the result of the first try will trigger a new objective on your second. You'll see what I mean as you read this.

[Spoiler warning to anyone reading if they haven't played after the second night.]

Also just advice, I usually put stuff I find and might need later in the main folder (Where [LIGHT] used to be) so I can easily drag it around without having to find it again.

1. Keep the game open, and open up the files for the game. I use the itch.io app on my computer, so I just right click the game to find the game file directory. If you don't use the app, go into your computer's downloads folder to find the game's files.

2. Find the [LIGHT] file, and delete it. Literally just click and delete. Whether you started the game or not doesn't affect the game progression as it will reset you back in the room you sleep in.

3. Read the books on the bookshelf! They will tell you what to do next. Go to the room to the left where the vase was. Click on the right side of the room 4 times (1 time will trigger dialogue, so just 3 times after that). A door will appear.

4. After entering the room, there will be a phone. You have to check your files again because you need a phone number. You will see that now a folder called [BACKROOM] exists. Open it and double click on [TELEPHONE] to find the number (Not sure if it's the same for every game, but mine is 052). Dial it in and see the dialogue. Exit the room.

5. The vase will appear in the hallway, click on it. Go into the new folder [HALLWAY] and find the subfolder [VASE] and find [KEY]. You can't do anything with it until you go into the Pet Shop to your left. Feeding the pets and watering the plants doesn't matter by the way, but you can. Click on the cupboards.

6. Drag the [KEY] into the new [CUPBOARDS] folder. In game, you will be be able to open the second cupboard. In [CUPBOARDS] you will find [BODY]. Drag [BODY] to [BACKROOM] and go back and call on the phone. After you see all the dialogue, the game will end. Open it again and do everything the same, but don't bring the body to the backroom yet. Read on first.

7. On this try, I believe you will see that something is swimming in the vase. In the files, you will see [GOLDFISH] (I think it's called?? It's just a fish lol). It's hungry, so go into the Pet Shop and click on the already open cupboard so you know pet food exists. Drag [PET FOOD] from [CUPBOARDS] into the [VASE]. The fish is now "fed".

8. Uhh ngl I tried restarting the game because I forgot what to do, but I think you get another door. There's a pot in that room. Go to the place with flowers, and check the cupboards to find the seed. Drag the seed file to the pot and then climb the vines. I don't remember what happens but you find the heart??

9. Drag the heart file and body file to the backroom and voilà. Sorry for the bad walkthrough bits at the end. I'm currently struggling with resetting lol.

10. (Optional) You can keep going back to the game to get a calling card from Dark. I am currently trying to find out where to go from there as like I said, trying to reset haha

Thank you so much for the help! I actually figured it out with the file stuff by myself, and I walked my friend through the game! This was awesomeeeee <3
