This... was a great game. Loved the atmosphere and the characters, everything. 10/10 game, I'd buy you a coffee but I dont have any spare money right now.

I quickly realized what she meant by "delete the lights" but didn't know how to actually do it lol.

Wow! What a game. I really enjoyed this. Kudos on such an interesting and out of the box thinking game. It took me longer than I would care to admit to realise what I had to do, but once I did it was all very clear. Loved the story and I hope to see something more from this by way of prequel and sequel. I'm not sure if I missed anything, but I think I got it all. I'd be interested to hear if I didn't. Well done npckc studios... fantastic game! (video playthrough linked)

someone please help!!

I'm trying to replay the game, but it won't work!!! I've searched for an answer, done what everyone says, and even deleted every trace of the game, but it WON'T RESET!!! There's no Appdata folder, no RenPy file, none of that.

Please help! I'm on Windows.

Edit: I finally found the Roaming folder! (and not intentionally, funny enough)

(+1)

Hi Bright. The "AppData" folder is a hidden system folder, so to see it you may have to enable the option to show hidden files. It is inside USERS > {Your username}. Once inside AppData, you want ROAMING > RENPY. Then delete the game folder within. You will need to delete you main A Pet Shop After Dark game folder as well to completely start a fresh.

There's no Appdata folder. Could it be because I'm on a school computer or something?

(+1)

As I mentioned above, its a hidden system folder. So if you are on a school computer I would imagine they are locked down to hide those folders. There should be an option in the Windows explorer menu to "show hidden files & folders". If you can't see that, the school probably has that locked down. As it's stored in the users folder, the other option could be to sign in as a different user (that hasn't played the game).

Alright.

Or use Win+R

It takes you right to Roaming in my past

I found the folder when messing with computer narration. Thanks for the help :)

Excellent. That's great. 😀👍

So, I tried entering the calling card "secret" number on the telephone after truly reseting the game, but turns out the telephone only accept 3 numbers. so... so far, I really could not find a single place in the files where I could use "3141"... guess it's just a nice mistery for a next game? Or like Dark said, she "will find you".

How'd you reset the game?

(1 edit)

delete the whole game file, then search your computer for the AppData file, then enter the Roaming file and  then delete the RenPy file inside. It should work.

This game was very clever and memorable!

I honestly didn't think it was scary, but I get how it's "horror themed", so I'm not chiding it or anything.

I got the card in the end, but I'm a little disappointed I didn't learn her name. Is there some kinda sequel in the works? I'm pretty sure she and I are supposed to meet again...

if you select the card with the text arrow copy and paste it on txt doc you'll learn her name (and a number that has no use so far, at least in game)

(+1)

Thanks for the info, but is that (D***) really her name?

yes. from what I've been told, the author confirmed themself via... twitter I guess? Someone on the comments section answered that to me and I trust them \o

(+1)

Well, thanks for the info :)

Help! I get this error when I play

for mac, please read the download instructions which are on the download page.

I read it, but I'm still a bit confused.

I followed the directions but it still didn't work

WOW! ITS LIKE TRACEBACK.TXT!

(1 edit)

I feel there is a secret involving the card so i will likely experiment for a bit for now i think i will hold on the to card file incase its used as a easter egg for a future game

(-1)

this was such a fun and cute game! it took a moment for me to figure out the mechanics, but once it became obvious, i was able to finish the game quickly and get the proper ending. i love games that are more interactive like this and require you to do things outside of just the actual game. great job!

but what does

"t
DARK
3141 ,"
mean?

loved the game tho, especially the mechanics behind it!

How do I reset the game, because I want to replay it?

(+1)

first delete the game folder and then type %appdata% into your search bar and it should automatically send you to “roaming”,if not the just open “roaming.” Open “renPy” and delete the folder in there. Boom, game reset

I absolutely loved this! I've never had a game that used the method you did (don't want to spoil it 😉) and it blew my mind with how clever the trick was!

Fantastic work! ☺️

I absolutely love the artstyle

I really enjoyed this game, it's cute, its kinda difficult, it's slightly scary, and it's paced really well. Overall well done (also here's the video of me playing it)

Really awesome game!

really nice game

I love it.

Like everyone else, I'm dying to know what to do with the calling card.
Has anyone figured out if there's a reason the pet (4) is a gif, instead of a png like all the other ones? They're red eyes, just like (5) but the same red colour like DARKs eye when they wink. The delay in the gif is 1200 of just pitch black, then just a flash 100 of the red circles/eyes in darkness. Whenever I actually open up the gif, I notice that afterwards the other dark PNGs all have their previews shift right or something and it makes them into black squares. The images are still the same if you open them though.

Tried renaming myself DARK, didn't do anything.
Renamed myself 3141, didn't do anything.

Tried calling 735, didn't do anything.
tried changing the # in the telephone txt to 735 and then called, nada.

Put the calling card anywhere I could, nada.
Put LIGHT in the (WINDOW), nada.
Put anything else I could in the (WINDOW), still nada.

When I put (3, 1, 4, 1) I think I broke it, at the ending it went through all the scenes and kept repeating when I clicked (as opposed to bringing me to the menu before I tried again.)
the (#) txt at some point in time after I put it in as 7353141 it changed to 7454431 and I'm unsure if this is anything significant.

i think im just gonna reply this here in hopes of maybe furthering the secret discussions from here/below because i think theyre interesting, but also cause i didnt want to put a question like this right at the top around the game's release date.

I really enjoyed this game though, the art is lovely and it's cute and spooky.

regarding what u said though, i'm somewhat convinced there's some small further secret regarding the card info & i noticed while playing through the game that there are some unused folders for objects we dont interact with; (window) and (bed). they appear once the object is interacted with.
though one thing I didnt check is if there were any extra folders made during the garden segment, or momentarily during the end convo of the game.

my take was also that the eyes gif was Dark's spooky spirit hiding out in that cage just by the eyecolour motif.

anyway ive tried alot of the same stuff & im not sure what other use the card numbers would be, since you cant dial 4 digits on the phone. maybe water plant3+1/pet4+1? ( or maybe itll be in a later game, idk :0 )

..also there's a file that doesnt appear during the normal game path in the game files. it doesnt exactly help to know that at all though, because its devoid of the context that would make it useful. i felt kinda bad for finding it in possibly a cheap way though, although just knowing an extra file exists doesnt magically solve a puzzle (if there is one); i just have no idea where to find it ingame, and dont want to if i cant find it naturally. so maybe it's fine. idk i was just curious. the game is about messing with files, afterall. anyway the real question is what context would it appear in; the game isnt rly interactable after the point where i'd assume it would be applicable.

given what it's called i assume itd have to do with what happens with -O in the ending, ( or possibly the (4) file, if the eye colour is meant to imply that that one pet cage is holding dark ) but you cant really interact with the game beyond chatting after that point as far as ive found so im out of ideas.
have tried a few folder shenanigans like (MENU) or (MAINMENU) considering that's where the object in question appears. idk what would happen though, really.

- all i will say is I gather from the file symbols (♡:⬜/⬛) are counterparts. maybe inversely, tho that was already my thought initially upon opening (body)

we resurrect (dark), though deleting (light) also becomes a question in itself with context.  aaa thats totally overthinking it now lmao, it prob just refers to -O at the end.

and of course, maybe there's just no further secret in this game, and it's a setup for a sequel? whooo knooooows, but the game was a neat journey either way.

I really want to believe theres something here though! but i have no idea what else to try after playing through it like alot of times trying stuff everyone had already tried, among other things.

big oof

Honestly I don't even remember the files I went through and saw, I kept an eye on them all as I played though.
I deleted all my saves and ect and played through again a few times after scouring around and reading everything here.
I kept a video of quicker runthroughs lol.

I didn't think about the numbers and watering the plants/feeding the pets.
I don't actually even remember if you can go to "sleep" without feeding/watering everything.

The numbers do really confuse me too. I hope this is all a set-up for a sequel or something.
I'm ready for it.

Hi ! So, I liked the part of the game I'e been throught already ! But I think I've been geeting bugs with my mac version. (Spoilers)

I think the one at the end of the day is intentionnal, but when I wake up in the dark, whenever I click on something there's a "an exception has occured" appearing. Sometimes it's not in the same lines, and I think it's preventing me from progressing with the phone (I think I found the code, but it doesn't work when I type it, saying the same thing as if I typed random numbers, and it shows two errors after I click on the phone, so I guess it could be linked).

Am I just dumb and need to do something else before typing the code or is there really a problem that needs to be fixed ? If so, do you want me to put screenshots of the different errors i've been getting ?

Thank you in advance.  (And sorry for my possible bad english...)

Okay, I managed to play the window version, and there's definitely bugs. After the end of the first day, I'm immediatly getting the part where everything is dark. And I didn't really find the code, I think that was the renpy version of something like that, so I AM dumb, but in my defense, nor the LIGHT or any other files after that appears in the dark part was in the mac file. I checked after I redowloaded the game. So I guess that's why I got the dark part immediatly, and why the code didn't work. I didn't finish the game yet, but I'll tell here if I find anything related to the bugs on the mac version

for mac, please read the download instructions which are on the download page.

So that ending...  You are clearly setting up for something.

Amazing! The puzzles gave off a OneShot vibe, and were really fun in general.

I liked the concept but am stuck at the phone and can't figure it out honestly.

Think outside the game window.
(Spoilers)

Check the game files. Find the phone. Read the file.

I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! Such a nice story, nice game mechanics, just lovely all around.

This looks like such a cool game, but I can’t play it on my mac! It crashes with constant Read-only file system: errors. I downloaded the game into a folder with read/write permissions, but the errors are coming from somewhere deep in my filesystem. I think this is due to app translocation, unfortunately. I’m on macOS 10.14.6.

I was able to download and play on an older mac! OSX 10.9.5 worked. I do think the issue might be app translocation on newer OSX versions, but I’m not sure how to get around that.

Thank you for the game, that was lovely! The meta aspect especially, not to mention the bonus game I got where I learned about app translocation :)

I liked the sound- it was simple and atmospheric without feeling repetitive. You brought a lot of interaction to a game without having to actually build in all that interaction, which was clever. Very nice.

i'm glad you got it working. re: app translocation you can try steps like these: https://wiki.keyboardmaestro.com/assistance/Translocation_Problem

(+1)

Thanks! That did fix the problem. I had to download the zip file, open it, and then move the lightsoffgame.app file itself (NOT the folder it was in) to another location. Once I did that the errors stopped. You might want to specify that mac users need to move that file specifically to another location, not just download it to somewhere outside the Downloads folder.

I wanted to try this on my windows pc, however my malware detection caught this file while unzipping it. I even tried to exclude the file from the malware detection but it would still not allow it. It looks cool from the pictures, so good job with that!

I really liked playing this game. I will say that the concept of the game is really cool.

ah this game is so good! not being able to figure out to do with (CARD) is gunna bother me though!!

(+1)

I gave this game a play-through, and I must say, it's a VERY well done game with a really cool concept at it's core.

I'm stuck at

*spoiler*

The phone room

Think outside the game.

pleasee add this to the playstore i really want to play it thank u

absolutely 10/10.

Just finished playing this and I love love love love love it!! The gameplay was quite unique, and I loved solving the puzzles!! The storyline was amazing, and the artwork was simply spectacular!! I would totally recommend anybody that likes playing puzzle games to play this!!

(+1)(-1)

So good. Better than Doki Doki.

(+1)(-1)

Pros and cond are down below) Check out my vid here:

Advantages:

1. This is so damn cool! I loved the concept, it was such a cool puzzle game! The 4th wall breaking was definitely creepy, I had goozebumps all over!

2. The art style is cool) I love how simplistic it is but at the same time it feels like the characters are looking right into your soul!

3. That's very cool that there are multiple versions of comments for the same stuff, so cool to return to the game to see what has changed.

Disadvantages:

1. I think the game would benefit a lot if you'd script the situations when the player puts stuff in the wrong places (like comments which signifies that it actually happened in the world but it was not the right solution). Though, that's hard to script everything, so you can do only the most common mistakes. It'd still be so much cooler!

2. It would be awesome is there'd be different solutions whith different consequences for the same task. For example, the player could feed the goldfish or could place it in the tank in the other room and it would get eaten and dissapear so the player would have to restart. Or it would be even cooler if the player would have to fail in order to progress (for example: make the goldfish eaten, then it'd drop something which the player would have to save in the other folder and use upon restrrting).

3. Maybe the game would benefit a lot if you add more sound cues to it. There is no nee to voice act everything, but if the last Dark's lined would be suddenly voice acted, that'd blow the player's mind!

Overall:

I guess, there is so much more which can be done with the game in order to improve it. Normally, if I see lots of room for improvement, I rate 4 stars. But this experience got me so involved and fascinated that I can not rate it less than 5. 5/5 it is!

Hope my feedback was useful!

After the second night I was sure this was just going to be a blatant Doki Doki rip-off, but it really surprised me in terms of quality storyline, artwork, and gameplay. The puzzles were just the right amount of challenging and hard and I'm having an uncommon and uncharacteristic lack of remorse for time spent playing video games. Thanks, npckc!

(+1)

So cute! So Goth! So Fun! So Cutegothfun!! Fetch my eyeliner, we're getting gloomy!

This game was super interesting and really, really fun! Thank you for putting it out!

(1 edit) (+2)(-1)

SPOILER

I don't know if someone already found it, but if you open the (CARD) with adobe reader you get a close-up view of her two eyes, with one of them open, like when she says :"Just let me know".

I think that's the only thing and the game ends there

(+1)

I opened it in Google drive. Same image appeared of her winking, but opening the file resulted in it saying DARK as the header and 3141 in bold. It is a PDF.

Loved the game! It was unsettling but awesome! I needed to fix some technical difficulties, but I finished the game and I walked my friend through! Thank you for one of the best games I've ever played! <3

"KEY" file did not show up in my playthrough, had to look up a walkthrough to see what was going on.

(+1)

OMG, I'm so proud to have figured it out! Loved it!!
