This is a content warning generator for itch.io game pages. The pop-up version will show up above the regular game page until it is clicked on, at which point it will disappear until the next time the user visits the page. The embedded version will show up wherever you place it in the game summary.

NOTE: Custom CSS must be enabled on your itch.io account in order to use the pop-up content warning made by this generator on your own game page. Read itch.io's CSS customisation guide HERE before contacting itch.io support for custom CSS. If you want to use the embedded content warning (shown above as ▶ CONTENT WARNING), custom CSS is not necessary.

This generator makes it possible to create a content warning like the ones demonstrated on this page for your own game.

Pop-up version:

The colour of the popup and the text within need to be specified within the generator, but other details (where the popup shows up, how big the popup is, showing it inline instead of in a fixed position, &c.) can be changed by editing the custom CSS code directly.

~

Embedded version:

You can change how the text shows up through itch.io's text editor! This version is very simple to implement so while I am including it in the generator, you can really just copy/paste the code below and put it right into the HTML text editor for your game summary.

<details>
<summary>CONTENT WARNING</summary>
type your content warning here!
</details>

~

I made this generator because currently itch.io does not have an option to show content warnings without making your game NSFW. This tool allows you to show a content warning if you want to without forcing you to list your game as NSFW, which it might not actually be, as well as specify what content you want to warn about.

Things to note for the pop-up version that requires custom CSS:

  • You need to paste the two codes into two separate locations, as specified in the generator:
    • The first is your game's Edit Project page (accessible from your Dashboard by clicking Edit underneath your game or your game page by clicking Edit Game at the top of the page).
    • The second is your game's Edit Theme window (accessible from your game page by clicking Edit Theme at the top of the page).
  • This button will not remember if you've pressed it before, so if you go to the unaltered link (without #cwseen at the end), the content warning button will appear again.
  • However, if you use the link after clicking the button (with #cwseen at the end), the content warning button will not appear.
  • The popup can run a little finicky on mobile browsers.
  • On the itch.io app, pressing the button causes the install bar at the bottom of the page to disappear. This is an issue with how the app only seems to show the bar at the bottom on unaltered game page links.

The above issues do not occur with the embedded version.

This tool is only meant as a stand-in - ideally, itch.io will implement content warnings in the site itself so users do not have to look for workarounds like this. (I've previously suggested the idea here.)

Thank you to enbykaiju & cloverfirefly for testing.

AH! YOU SCARED ME WITH THAT EMOJI BRO! CHILL!!!

(this  generator is good

Easy to use, very useful, and free. This generator is wonderful! Thank you very much.

Thank you so much for this generator :D (I'm terrible when it comes to CSS and HTML at the moment, but this is exactly what I needed!)

The game page I made using it, hehe (totally not advertising a little. Love your stuff!): https://mintglow.itch.io/violence-is-sometimes-the-answer

Thank you!!!

exactly what I needed!

I love your little generator tools, they're so helpful!

I talk about this in the summary:

  • This button will not remember if you've pressed it before, so if you go to the unaltered link (without #cwseen at the end), the content warning button will appear again.

This is great! There's one tiny bug that's itch-app related in that when I close the content warning the docked bottom bar (which allows me to install games) will also be hidden. I don't suspect it would be too difficult to look into that? Ideally itch will one day also natively support something like this. Thanks for your hard work!

oh that's very interesting! i haven't used the itch app myself, so i'm going to look into why this is happening. thank you for letting me know!

This is great!!! Now to turn on the custom CSS....

for turning on custom css, you can check out https://itch.io/docs/creators/css-guide & then contact itch.io support from the link at the bottom! when i asked for custom css to be turned on, support were fairly quick in getting back to me.
